Isn't there also the question of what these terms stand in implicit contrast to? How they'd be heard given certain cultural background assumptions?

For instance, the Sadducees were annihilationists. Yet Jesus and Paul use Sadducean eschatology as a foil to present their opposing eschatology.

Thanks Dr. Mounce, for this. A while back I was studying the doctrine of Limited Atonement and trying to compare appollumi in Romans 14:15 with its usage in John 3:16, which both mention Christ's death. This definitely informs that conversation a bit more.
